Sunday recap

It’s a light day, what with all the rainouts and everyone suffering perfect-game hangover. Let’s see what we can stir up.

Blue Jays 5, Royals 3: I take no joy in reporting that KC’s 10-game skid includes all 9 home games this year. They’ve lost 10 straight at home dating to last year, which is a new franchise record.

  • The last team to lose at least 10 straight at home was Baltimore in 2007 (11).
  • Brett Lawrie got his steal of home at last … but this time, not with Joey at the Bat.
  • Francisco Cordero got the save for Toronto, but not without inducing the usual anxiety from Jays fans. Over the past 3 years, there have been 72 reliever seasons of at least 2 Wins Above Replacement, with at least one for every team — except the Blue Jay.

Cards 5, Pirates 1. Pittsburgh has scored 3 runs total in Erik Bedard‘s four starts.

  • Bedard is the first in 10 years to lose 4 straight starts allowing 2 ER or less.
  • Most games scoring 1 run or less so far: Pirates, 7 out of 15 games; Reds, 7 of 16; A’s, 6 of 16.
  • Scoring 2 runs or less: Pirates, 11 of 15 games; Phillies, 10 of 16.
  • Of course, nobody can touch Kyle Lohse, so whaddaya gonna do…. Lohse’s streak of six starts with 6+ IP and 1 run or less (four this year) is the longest of his career, the longest active streak in the majors, and the longest by a Cardinal since Chris Carpenter had 7 in his 2005 CYA season. And the only live-ball STL streak longer than that was 11 by Bob Gibson in ’68.

Houston shut out LA 12-0 behind Wandy Rodriguez — their biggest shutout win since a 12-0 game in 2007, also started by Rodriguez.

  • For the Dodgers, it was their biggest shutout loss since a 13-0 whitewash by the Angels in 2005.

Rangers 3, Tigers 2: Who says that Texas can only mash? They scored the winning run in the 11th on a bases-loaded squeeze bunt. They had tied it in the 8th on a sac fly by Josh Hamilton, after Elvis Andrus drew a walk [sigh] from Joaquin Benoit, then took 2nd and 3rd on a wild pitch/throwing error combo.

  • Hamilton had 3 more hits today, including his 7th HR, and is hitting .418. Yet he has just 4 walks in 16 games. Yeah, Michael Young‘s .403 BA is a deterrent, but wouldn’t you still feed Hamilton curves in the dirt and chest-high fastballs until he shows he won’t chase?
  • DET Rookie Drew Smyly (6 IP, 1 R) is the first pitcher since Rich Harden (2003) to begin his career with 3 starts allowing 1 run or less, and is the first Tiger known to have done so.
  • Benoit issued just 26 unintentional walks in 121 IP in the past 2 years, but has walked 7 in 8 IP this year.
  • Detroit’s Thad Weber took the loss in his MLB debut. I’m sure it means nothing, but of the last 19 guys to do that (dating to 2004), only Hisanori Takahashi currently has an ERA+ of 100 or better in at least 100 career IP.

Reds 4, Cubs 3: The Cubs’ 4-12 start is their worst since 1997.

  • Alfonso Soriano is without an extra-base hit through 14 games, the longest streak of his career. (Just 2 years and $36 million to go … after this season.)
  • Aroldis Chapman issued his first 2 walks of the year after 18 strikeouts. He still has not allowed a run in 10 innings.

Rays 6, Twins 2: Josh Willingham‘s hitting streak ended at a career-best 15 games, as he went 0-2 with a walk and a HBP. Willingham had exactly 1 hit in 12 of the 15 games.

  • Yielding 5 runs in 5 IP today actually trimmed Francisco Liriano‘s ERA to 11.02. One more bad start and he’ll be due for a no-hitter.
  • Kidding aside, this was Liriano’s fourth straight game allowing 5+ ER in 5 IP or less. That’s the longest such streak since 2010. The record by a Twins pitcher is 5 games, by … Kyle Lohse, back in 2003.

Rockies 4, Brewers 1: I got nuthin’…. Well, OK, Tony Plush is the last regular player with neither a walk nor an extra-base hit. At 5 for 42, his BA, OBP and SLG are all .119. Still looking for his first RBI, too; he’s 0-10 with men on base.

One thing that is really bothersome for me as a fan is that the Royals have had the tying run on base in the ninth inning in 4 of their last 6 losses; they just haven’t been able to get that clutch hit when they need it.

JA:
Wondering if you noticed Josh Hamilton’s Sunday performance ( 3 for 3 with a sac fly and HR) followed an 0 for 5 Golden Sombrero on saturday. When was the last time that happened ( Hitless with 4 K’s in 5 AB’s and 3 for 3 the next day)?

“KC’s 10-game skid includes all 9 home games this year.”

If the Royals extend their streak tonight (Monday) in the finale against the Jays, Kansas City will get a chance against the Yankees on May 3-6 to match or surpass the 1994 Cubs’ record of 12 straight home losses to start a season.
