Notes from last night’s Astros-Rangers game

There’s Justin Maxwell, standing on third base after tripling, as he did twice last night. Here are the only other guys since 1916 to hit two triples on Opening Day:

Tillie Walker didn’t score after either triple, but he did drive in 4.

Rick Ankiel hit a pinch 3-run homer. Although this is also a pretty rare Opening Day feat, George Kottaras did it last year for the Brewers.

Since 1916, he’s only the 11th player to hit a 3-run pinch-HR (or grand slam) on Opening Day:

These were all 3-run shots, save Bobby Murcer’s pinch homer, which was of the bases-full variety. Note there may be other players who entered as a pinch-hitter and amassed 3 RBI over more than 1 plate appearance, but these are the only guys to get at least 3 RBI on the homer.

Erik Bedard got a save the easy way, pitching 3+ innings in a game that was pretty much out of reach. He’s the first guy to get an Opening Day save while pitching at least 3 innings in a long time:

Before Sutter in 1984, as you would guess, it was done quite often.

The Astros played their first game as an AL team 15 years to the day after the Brewers played their first game as an NL team. In that game, Bob Wickman took the loss in the 9th as Kerry Ligtenberg won despite walking 4 while recording only 4 outs. I would love it if somebody could find a link between these two games–maybe a guy who coached in one but played in the other?

How about: Greg Maddux was the starting pitcher vs. the Brewers, and his brother Mike Maddux was a coach vs. the Astros? That’s the best I got.

Another is Rick Ankiel is a former teammate of Mike Matheny, the Brewers’ catcher in their NL opener.

Also, Ankiel and Bob Wickman (who finished the game for the Brewers in ’98) were both 2nd round draft picks and both were traded to the Braves in mid-season, on or close to the trade deadline (Wickman in 2006, Ankiel in 2010).

Whitfield walked in his pinch hitting appearance, then took over in right field. He hit his homerun later.

Do you guys think in another couple months I’ll be watching Scranton games rather than watching YES?

As a Red Sox fan, that would please me very much.

I think you might be watching Pawtuckett before I’m watching Scranton, no offense.

#10/mosc,

I don’t think I’m going to watch Pawtucket no matter how poorly the Red Sox do, as I’m nearly 400 miles away.

But ouch, that hurt.

Mosc, it looks grim to this veteran Yankee fan. Like 65. Age, injuries, inexplicable early declines, bad luck. Richardson and Kubek fell apart (both had negative war, both were 29, and both we out of baseball by the end of 1966) In those days, you kept looking at what was coming up from Syracuse, not Columbus or Scranton.

The injuries are the killer. The loss of last year’s nice bench is rather minimal. If the Yanks can avoid having the sink ship before they can get a couple of their middle of the order guys come back things should be fine. People wanna talk about all the homers that are gone but Gardner + Ichiro > Ibanez, Jones, and Swisher. Wells isn’t looking terrible and if he’s more 2010 than 2011 and when Granderson returns he’s more 2011 than 2012 and and and… I know a lot of things need to go right for them to be the… Read more »
