Quiz – World Series Preview (solved)

The 2013 World Series is expected to be the first in 55 years with a particular quirk. Something happened in the 1958 series between the Braves and Yankees that has not occurred in any subsequent World Series. Until this one.

What is this unusual occurrence?

Congratulations to John Autin! He identified that this is the first World Series since 1958 in which the game 1 starters both have 95 career wins with a .600 career winning percentage, and have both previously appeared in a World Series clinching game playing for their current teams.

In fact, neither of those two answers was the unusual occurrence I had detected. So, I’ll add a third answer – that Adam Wainwright and Jon Lester, like Whitey Ford and Warren Spahn in 1958, are both 29 years old or older and, unlike 18 other pairs of age 29+ game 1 starters since 1959, Wainwright and Lester have both played for only one franchise.

Teams that tied for the best record in baseball (with no other teams also tied).

Both game 1 starters owning at least 95 wins and a .600 W%?

Actually, Lee had 90 wins through 2009, as did McLain through 1968 — that’s why I kicked my threshold up to 95 wins.

This is close: Both game 1 starters have previously won a WS game during a championship year.

It matches Spahn & Ford in 1958, and Lester & Wainwright in 2013 … and (I believe) just one other pair — 1999, Maddux & Orlando Hernandez.

Here’s one that does work, I think: Both game 1 starters previously appeared in a deciding WS game for the team they would represent in game 1.

Doug, I think my answers might be more “trivially” interesting, but yours is more actually interesting.

Doug, when I saw your answer I initially couldn’t understand how last year’s WS Game 1 wouldn’t fit the criteria. Verlander: check. Now, who started Game 1 for the Giants? Cain or Bumgarner (or Lincecum) would have fit the description, but as the NLCS went the distance and SF’s rotation was out of whack, Zito got the nod for Game 1. So no dice.
