Then there was Felix Millan, who once had four hits in four at-bats, only to be erased each time by a double play off the bat of Joe Torre.

24 innings, and no resolution:

And 19.2 innings, Zero earned runs, from a guy who would get a Ring, and not pitch in the Majors after that year:

The set-up men were probably in the South Pacific.

A thought-provoking list, Andy, thanks! You must have been sitting on this one for a while. The list shrinks to just 14 games if you restrict it to 9 innings or less. It is even more uncommon not to score or drive in a run in a nine-inning game than a long low-scoring one. Talk about batters isolated on a desert island in the batting order. Unfortunately there is on play by play data on Joe Medwick’s three-double, nine-inning game in 1940. His team hit into no double plays in that game. Roberto Clemente’s triple came with two out in… Read more »

Eight days after Medwick’s big game, he was traded to those same Dodgers.

In the Jason Kendall game, the 4 batters ahead of him scored 7 runs, but also drove in 7. Kendall came up with the bases empty four times, once after a home run. The Pirates’ opponent the Giants also had a 5 for 5 gamee by Jeff Kent, but he had 2 runs scored and 5 RBI on the strength of a cycle plus a single. In the other 9-8 game on the list, all the Phillies runs were scored and driven in by the batters ahead of Darren Daulton, who led off an inning 4 times. Similar story for… Read more »

On the flip side of the coin are these 11 games.

All have no hits in 4 or more AB, no walks or HBP, but 2 or more runs and RBI.

That list reminds me of this game I remember watching on TV….

Scott Servais was compiling a rather interesting box score line (3 0 0 3) by collecting RBI’s on three groundouts in his first 3 at bats. Then he ruined it by getting a single leading off the 8th inning in his fourth AB….

It’s too bad there’s no Victorino, Ka’aihue or Agbayani on this list. There ought to be a “Five-Oh” connection, no?
