Slim Love was born in Love, Mississippi.

My late grandfather was born on Valentine’s Day, and Valentine was his middle name.

Who had the most games by a player born on Valentine’s Day?

Candy LaChance, of course.

(But he never was a teammate of Cupid Childs.)

Wikipedia has it that Joe Valentine Stripp (fantastic name) was the last player to be on the receiving end of a spitball, having faced Burleigh Grimes’ final delivery. Here’s the game: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BRO/BRO193409200.shtml

Blooming heck, five hall of famers in that Pittsburgh team!

Ah, you are correct. Worthy or not that’s a pretty incredible number. Is there a particular reason so many of this group are in there, especially if, as you say, the majority are not hall worthy?

Grimes was the last spitballer which made him famous, and he was from Wisconsin. Lloyd Waner, I have no idea, I suspect his brother helped. His first 3 seasons were his best and then he gradually declined, so maybe they stuck in people’s mind and represented his entire career. His first… Read more »

I think it’s also worth noting that Joe Stripp didn’t strike out very often.

Is Joe Stripp’s OPS+ correct?

Too bad, I was rather enjoying Ellis Valentine’s 208 lifetime OPS+.

As of this moment, it seems that the OPS+ numbers have been fixed for active players, but not for retired ones. (Last night, all the numbers were wrong.)
