Adam Dunn and triple-W games

In a recent post, John Autin identified that Jim Thome has the most career games with at least one of each of the TTO components – a walk, a strikeout and a home run. John called this phenomenon the “Thome Trifecta”, but I’m going to try a different moniker – triple-W, for a walk, a whiff and a whallop.

The leader in this category for 2012 is Adam Dunn of the White Sox, with 14 triple-W games so far this season, including 3 in a row against the Royals coming out of the All-Star break. After the jump, I’ll take a closer look at this phenomenon.

As mentioned, Jim Thome has the most triple-W games in a career. Here’s that list.

Earlier this season (highlighted below), the Mariners and Diamondbacks combined to have 5 players with a triple-W game, only the second time in the game-searchable era with that many. In the game with 6 such players, one was backup catcher Ron Slocum of San Diego, who had his first PA in the 8th inning (the Padres won 17-16 in 15 innings).

Actually, there probably isn’t WPA data for that far back…

Correct. WPA starts about 1950, I believe.

Note that Dave Kingman has both the highest and lowest WPA on that list. He managed a negative WPA with 3 home runs by twice making an out and failing to advance any runners with the score close and two runners on with nobody out. First time, he hit GIDP with runners and 1st and 3rd, failing even to score the runner at 3rd.

In the other Kingman game, his two big hits were a two-run home run in the top of the 9th to tie the game, and a 3 run shot in the top of the 15th to win it.

His first homer got him a WPA of .36 and the second one got him .46 WPA.

Also one of Kingman’s 3 homers came with his team behind 17-6 and his WPA was virtually 0.

Actually, I see the Ted Williams 1949 game in the triple double list has WPA, so I guess there are selected games with WPA back at least that far.

That 1970-05-23 game — 5 hrs. 29 minutes in Candlestick — the hospitals must have been swamped with frostbite victims!

“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”

I remember attending a double-header at Candlestick in August (1978, I think), with the Giants in the thick of the pennant race. It was a decent crowd, but not huge. The locals knew better, I guess. It really was cold – I left early (which I almost never do) as the second game was a blowout.

I guess I never really focused in on Dunn’s stat line last year: 66 for 415 with 36 runs scored in 122 games / 496 PAs and a 54 OPS+ / -3.1 WAR, and those other not-so-goodies, that is just crazy

That 5-17-02 game that Bernie had one of the seven triple-doubles was a memorable one…down 8-3 Twins score six in the sixth to take lead. Bernie homers off Guardado w one out in ninth to force extras. Twins score three in the 14th, but Giambi answers with walk-off grand slam to win 13-12.

Pat Seerey – Led the league 4 times in strikeouts, every year in his career that he played 100 games (his max games was 126). Hit only .224, but knew how to take a walk, and had almost 40% of his hits go for extra bases.

In the outfield, his stats indicate he had sub-standard range and too many errors, but a decent arm. Wily Mo Pena is among his top sims.

Clearly, a player before his time. Would have made a nice DH, don’t you think. 🙂
