3-homer games since 1992, split by stadium

I just did a manual workup of all 3-homer games since 1992, split out by team’s home stadium. Note that this doesn’t take into account stadium changes–for example the numbers for Washington include all 3-HR games by Expos or Nats hit at home, and all 3-HR games by visitors at the Expos’ or Nats’ home stadium.

Team H V Total
CHC 9 8 17
COL 8 9 17
TEX 9 7 16
CIN 9 6 15
BOS 6 5 11
TOR 6 5 11
MIL 7 3 10
PHI 2 8 10
CLE 5 3 8
ARI 4 3 7
BAL 3 3 6
DET 3 3 6
KCR 0 6 6
NYY 5 1 6
WSN 2 4 6
ATL 1 4 5
CHW 1 4 5
HOU 2 3 5
LAD 3 2 5
SEA 2 3 5
STL 3 2 5
OAK 3 1 4
SDP 1 3 4
LAA 2 2 4
PIT 1 2 3
SFG 1 2 3
TBR 2 1 3
FLA 1 1 2
MIN 0 2 2
NYM 0 0 0

So these are 3-HR games by home-team players, and by visiting players, and the total.

Check out the disparities for the Brewers, who have hit a lot more at home than their visitors have, and the Phillies, who have yielded a lot more at home than they’ve hit.

3-homer games at Shea: Dave Kingman for the Cubs in 1979 Pete Rose for the Reds in 1978 (his only 3-homer game) Richie Allen for the Phillies in 1968 No Met has ever hit three at home. Eight Mets have hit three homers in a game on the road (including Kingman). The Mets are one of two franchises that have no three-homer games at home since 1962. The Twins are the other one. Going back to 1918, the one and only time the Twins franchise have had a hitter with a three-homer game at home was Jim Lemon’s three-homer game… Read more »

I could find only two other searchable games where a player hit 3 there, Joe DiMaggio in 1950 and Rocky Colavito in 1961.

Royals: 0-6, that’s not too good

I wonder if the Royals have ever had a player hit 3 homers in a game, especially at home.

They actually had a player do this in 1991, the year before Andy’s data starts. Danny Tartabull had 3 home runs at Royals Stadium on 7/6/1991. Of course, they still lost.

Freddy Patek did it. Don’t quite remember what year.

George Brett did it. Against the Yankees. In the playoffs. (Of course, that one doesn’t count. . . .)

Patek’s actually came when he was with the Angels (June 20, 1980). He threw in a double for good measure.

Patek hit only 5 HRs that year and 41 lifetime. I know of only one other player who hit 3 HRs in a game and had fewer lifetime HRs. Bill Glynn, who hit 3 in a game in 1954, had 10 lifetime.

I’ll be darned: you’re right. (Not that it’s so amazing that you’re right about something, but I was so *sure*. . . .)

This is a follow-up to my post #10. Here is a partial list of 3-HR in a game players who had fewer lifetime HRs than Patek.

Player………..HR
Bob T hurman…..35
Tommy Brown……31
Del Wilber……19
J. Pendleton…..19
Jim Tobin……17
Don Leppert…..15
Tuffy Rhodes….13
Bill Glynn……10
Merv Connors…..8

Jim Tobin, of course, is the only pitcher to hit 3 HRs in a game and Tommy Brown is the youngest player to hit a HR.

You are correct. I think he hit two (if not all three) off of Doc Gooden. Eventually, he wound up playing in Japan.

And the Royals lost that playoff game as well. F’ing Yankees.

I believe the term is “Damn Yankees.”

And Brett & Co more than made up for it two years later.

(During the regular season, Brett had one homer in 50 PA vs Catfish.)

Just makes Barry’s HR record even more impressive.
