Hear Andy from High Heat Stats live on ESPN Radio tonight

I will be appearing on ESPN Radio 1510 AM in Kansas City tonight to discuss the results of our Royals Mount Rushmore poll. The folks from the Kansas City Baseball Vault have invited me on as a guest and I expect to be heard around 7:30 ET / 6:30 CT.

You can listen live at 1510.com or, if it’s already aired, check out the show archive at the link above.

Andy, I’m sure you’ll do great. While #1 is not in doubt, #2 through #4 Royals have enough legit candidates to provide a lively discussion.

Maybe you could do this in other cities ,such as DC? (Yeah, I know, it’s a lot of work setting that up, starting with getting someone to return your calls).

I didn’t seek this out. Even before the Royals Rushmore post was up, the folks at the KC Baseball Vault asked me if I’d be interested.

I’m going to try to listen on-line.

You might point out that the 1 vote John Mayberry got probably didn’t come from Whitey Herzog.

As a group, I think we represented ourselves pretty well on this vote. There’s a reasonable case to be made for all of the top 10 vote getters and I think the final results are a pretty fair representation of about how they should rank (I switched Appier for Saberhagen in my vote but other wise mine was the same).

Let me give you some helpful advice that I’ve always found useful in times of pressure:

      Don’t screw up.

Andy, Hartvig’s kind advice is just another sign of the civil generosity that has become characteristic of this blog that you began. [Here, think: low-tech guy clueless how to insert smiley face.]

Good job! I’ll be catching up via the archive. Perhaps another 29 opportunities will follow.

You guys don’t know anything about my day job–turns out I make big presentations in high-pressure situations all the time, so this is no big deal. I don’t expect to be all that nervous.

You were excellent! You’re voice was deeper than I expected.

I’m assuming the answer to your trivia question can’t be Brett- it would be too obvious. Sweeney maybe?

When they asked about dark horses from other teams I was sure you were going to mention Eddie Kranepool. That was my only disappointment in the whole interview.

Mike L- THAT explains the “I am your father” comment when Luke Hochevar’s name came up!

I’ll try to listen live online, but I may have to catch the archive. I’ll have to wait and see…

I’ll try, although not quite sure yet where I’m going to be in an hour. I don’t mean that in any greater metaphysical sense, although I suppose we all need to take that into consideration.

Break a leg. Whatever that expression means.

        Balboni’s 162 avg:

        31 HR
        84 RBI
        .229 BA
        144 K

But you know, those ’85 Royals did not have much offense behind Brett. McRae was still dangerous. Lonnie Smith could steal a bag (if he could get on). Balboni was an important piece of that Championship team.

        36 HR
        112 ops+

And against the Angels, who KC beat out by one game:

        .348 .423 .630 1.054

Royals went 9-4 vs the Angels.

Hartvig @15, thanks. I would have mentioned Kranepool if I’d thought of it. I didn’t know I’d get questions about the other polls and didn’t prepare for that…prepared a ton for other things.

As I said, you were excellent. Since that was the only question I might have answered differently from my view from the cheap seats, I’d have to call the results a bottom of the ninth, one run behind, three run home run.

      Best of all?

      You didn’t screw up!

Got to listen live after all, Andy. As your comment at #13 might have led me to expect, you know how to make a presentation – poised, clear, and very interesting.

In your comments you made it clear that your KCR Rushmore would have included Appier, and I was impressed that as moderator here you hadn’t pushed that view, though you mentioned how underrated you felt he was.

I expect we’ll have some new contributers from KC joining the site after tonight’s show.

I kept IM-ing the radio station to get them to say “The Phillies are done!”, but they never did.

Oh, well. At least Andy did a great job.

BTW, I was sure the trivia answer was Kevin Seitzer, but no! It was even more non-obvious than that.

The scary thing about that trivia question is how close Jose Offerman is to being the answer.

My next guess would have been Porter ’79 … I think we wore out that particular Strat-O card.

            Interesting answer to the question.

Andy mentioned that Jose Offerman was close to being the right answer. Another guy who was close was Paul Schaal. Don’t know who he was? He’s the answer to the trivia question “Who was the Royals’ third baseman before George Brett?”

          2. bstar

Wow, Yuniesky Betancourt. Who knew? 🙂 Seriously, the answer for anyone who didn’t hear it was John Mayberry.

          3. Doug

It was in Mayberry’s 1975 season when he led the AL in BB and OPS+, and finished 2nd in MVP voting, behind Fred Lynn. Mayberry was also 3rd in HR, 2nd in RBI and 4th in WAR that year.

The Royals were in 2nd place every day from June 4 to the end of the season, trailing the As who, other than June 3, were in first place every day from Apr 23.

Andy, how do you access your radio interview from the Kansas City Baseball Vault archive? I have missed it live and can’t figure out where to go once I click on the link.

Is it possible it hasn’t been archived yet?

It’s definitely not archived yet. I wouldn’t expect to see it until tomorrow at the earliest. It will be Week 4 once it’s up there.

It should be there now Neil! Just gave it a listen, well done Andy. It was hilarious when Damon’s HoF candidacy came up, I was waiting for the inevitable “it ain’t gonna happen”.

Good job Andy. It was nice to put a voice with your name and icon pic.
You have time for a day job? Man your tweets and posts are prolific enough…especially considering you have a job.
Given your clue about high pressure situations I’m going to guess you are a hostage negotiator.

I run a tech company during the day, so I’m constantly negotiating deals, talking to big clients, that sort of thing. In the end, when my interview started last night, I was a tad nervous just before, but forgot all about nerves once it started. I was highly aware of a couple questions that were asked that I didn’t have good answers ready for, but that wasn’t nervousness as much as it was annoyance with myself that I didn’t have good info ready. I knew going in, though, that it’s impossible to prepare for every possible question.

That radio show is unusual, too, in that there are FIVE hosts, so a lot of possible questions can come up, and I’m not sure they completely plan out everything.
