Quiz – pitching in different eras (solved)

Here are notable pitchers of the past twenty seasons. They alone have accomplished a seasonal feat that epitomizes pitchers of the current era?

What is this feat?

Hint: these are the only pitchers since 1916 to achieve this feat.

There’s also a part B to the quiz after the jump.

I’m afraid I’ve stumped the panel with this one. It’s a bit complicated to explain – the solution is after the jump

Here’s the second part of the quiz. The players below are the only pitchers since 1946 to have accomplished a particular season feat. What is this feat?

Hint: no pitcher has accomplished the second feat since the first time a pitcher accomplished the first feat.

As described in comment #26, all of the pitchers in both lists won 20 games in their age 29 season or earlier.

  • The additional criterion to make it onto the first list was for your win total to be more than 10 times greater than your complete game total (i.e. W > 10 x CG). Never achieved until John Burkett in 1993, and now by 10 others since then.
  • The additional criterion to make it onto the second list is to have more losses than home runs allowed, last achieved by Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine, both in 1992. Prior to 1946, this was no big deal – had happened 218 times since 1901.

Doug:

An entirely intuitive response that seems to fit the first group: Led the league in wins with 2 or fewer complete games.

Adam Wainwright led the league in wins in 2009 with just 1 complete game so there must be more to it.

At least 20 wins and no more than two CG in a season.

That *seems* like 2 of the 3 criteria, Lawrence, but there are 25 seasons that meet those 2.

For Group A: Did they all lead the league in wins despite 2 or fewer complete games and ERA of at least 2.75?

Doug, how many criteria for Group A?

The “since 1916” hint suggests that a Game Finder is involved.

The second sentence says that it is a seasonal feat.

I guess the point is moot, but I would consider “most games with X in a season” to be a seasonal feat.

Was Tom Glavine very close to the second feat in 2000?

As well as no more than 2 CG.

It’s confounding that most of those guys had *more* than 20 wins in their only 20-win season(s) — but not Johan or Beckett.

It was their first season of 20+ wins for each of them when they had 2 or less CG and only 1 shut out.

They’ve each had only one 20 win season. Does that apply?
