Quiz – Four on the Fourth (solved)

Below are two lists of four players, one list of batters and one of pitchers. Both the batters and pitchers are the only players in the searchable era with a certain connection to the Fourth, one connection for the batters and a different but related connection for the pitchers.

So, what are the connections?

Hint #1: there is no batter vs. pitcher connection between the listed players (at least, none that is germane to the quiz)

Hint #2: the fact that Art Houtteman, Ray Moore and Billy Pierce were teammates of each other at various times is purely coincidental and has nothing to do with the quiz. Ditto for Dwight Evans and Rich Gedman. Honest.

Congratulations to Richard Chester and Insert Name Here! Richard correctly identified (with a little help) that these batters homered in a July 4th game off of a pitcher whose birthday is July 4th. Similarly, INS identified that these pitchers gave up a home run in a July 4th game to a batter whose birthday is July 4th. They are the only players in the searchable era who meet these criteria. The fact that there are four of each for July 4th – hey, truth is stranger than fiction.

Here are the games (birthday boys are bolded):

  • 1945 – Augie Bergamo homered off of Loren Bain. It was the final career home run hit and surrendered for both (also, the first HR surrendered by Bain).
  • 1955 – Bill Tuttle of the Tigers homered off of Art Houtteman.
  • 1958 – Bill Tuttle of the Athletics homered off of Ray Moore.
  • 1961 – Bill Tuttle of the Twins homered off of Billy Pierce.
  • 1979Wayne Nordhagen homered off of Rick Waits.
  • 1986 – Dwight Evans and Rich Gedman homered off of Jim Beattie.
  • 2011 – Eric Hosmer homered off of Sergio Santos.

Not that it means anything, but … Houtteman, Moore, Pierce, Waits and Beattie all surrendered two homers in these games. And Bergamo hit two, off of different pitchers.

The batters all hit HR on July 4 off a pitcher born on July 4. Evans and Gedman did it in the same game off Jim Beattie.

Doug: You accidentally gave it away. The first time I clicked on Augie Bergamo, instead of his home page stats coming up, a PI page showing Augie Bergamo vs. Loren Bain came up. That started it off. It looks like you later made a correction.

I’m assuming by ‘Fourth’ we’re talking about July 4th. On a quick glance of Red Sox 80’s boxscores I can’t see anything significant about Gedman. He hit one 4th of July HR but only had 4 hits total on July 4th in his career in 7 games. Evans was a monster on the 4th though. (At least in the 80’s – I didn’t search his 70’s results as I found nothing on Gedman to work with.) Evans hit HR’s in 84, 86, 88, and 90 and had multi hit games in 5 times on the 4th between 80-90. I’m sort… Read more »

I’d be shocked if this is the only criterion, but the pitchers all gave up 2 HRs in one game on July 4th.

Also, not sure if it’s related to the answer or not, but I refuse to accept as purely coincidental that Bill Tuttle hit HRs off Houtteman, Moore, and Pierce in the 1955 season (the one off Houtteman coming on July 4), then HRs off both Moore and Pierce in the 1958 season (the one off Moore coming on July 4), then hit a HR off Pierce on July 4, 1961.

Also, Harry Simpson had two career July 4 HRs… one off Houtteman and one off Moore, and once homered twice in one game off Pierce.

In yet another aside, Jim Lemon homered twice in his career off Billy Pierce: once a few days after homering off Moore, and once on July 4.

Yet I can’t tie Waits into anything weird like this… so I think it’s at least somewhat unrelated.

My answer is at #11 below, but the Simpson and Lemon coincidences remain inexplicable.

Bill Tuttle was born on July 4. I’ll leave it to someone else to complete the answer.

Wayne Nordhagen (homered on July 4 off Waits) was also born on July 4.

Clearly, it’s the reverse of the batters’ answer: Each pitcher gave up a HR on July 4 to a player born on July 4. For the other three of them, that happens to be Bill Tuttle.
