Quiz – Grimm’s Fables or Panda Power (solved)

While not all these players had fabled careers, all did reach the 1000 game milestone (or are on that trajectory) and all received MVP votes at some point in  their careers. But, that’s not the common thread connecting them.

What is the batting feat that only these players have achieved since 1914?

Congratulations to HowardR and Richard Chester! They teamed up to identify that only these quiz players have started a season since 1914 hitting safely in 20 or more consecutive games in which they had a PA. Those streaks and more are after the jump.

Here are those streaks.

It no doubt means nothing but I noticed this clustering:

  • 5 streaks in a 15 year period (1923-37)
  • nothing for 26 years
  • 4 streaks in a 15 year period (1964-78)
  • nothing for 27 years
  • 2 streaks in the past 9 years (2006-14)

The longest hitting streaks to start the 2014 season belong to these players (active streaks are bolded).

Looks like you used the Batting Game Finder

Not much power among the group (only one 30+ HR season among the group, and many never even had a 20+ HR season), yet they all slugged above .450 at least once. All of them slugged above .450 in at least one qualifying season with less than 100 RBIs, most of them less than 80 RBIs and/or less than 20 HRs. I’m thinking it has something to do with high slugging percentage (or possibly high OPS) but low numbers of HR, XBH, and/or RBI.

Something to do with hitting streaks? Multiple hitting streaks of 20+ games or something like that?

They all had at least one 20+ game hitting streak, so it could be that plus something else.

Maybe 20+ game hitting streak to start a season.

Definitely a 20+ game hitting streak to start a season.
Doug: I got the list using the Batting Streak Finder only.

All of them were discovered by Billy Martin in prison.

One who was good at stealing, averaging over 50 per season.
